Let's Make A Deal

I'll trade you one TFCC repair surgery for a lifetime of cakes. . .

So last Monday I had another post-op appointment with Dr. A, my hand surgeon, in Atlanta. I decided to take my great OT's some more of my famous chocolate and peanut butter cupcakes...just to make them happy (I think it worked, too!). I was talking to one of them a few days before about bringing them the cupcakes and she asked if I had taken Dr. A any of my goodies before. I hadn't and she told me he had quite the sweet tooth, so I decided to take a dozen to him, too. I baked up the deliciousness, packed them up, and headed to Atlanta to see what Dr. A had to say about my wrist, how it's healing, and this popped stitch I have. At the end of the appointment, I gave him the cupcakes and told him that I had made them for the OT's and that it was only fair that I make some for him since he is the one who fixed my mangled wrist in the first place. We then chatted for a few minutes about me being a baker and cake decorator. He asked what all I did, like cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, and then he asked me if I had a card. This summer I had ordered "real" business cards from Vista Print and luckily, I had some with me and gave one to him. He said something along the line of "we're always looking for cakes and goodies." He looked at the card, put it in his pocket, walked me to the desk to check-out, and said good-bye. On another note, I was really, really, really hoping that would be my last post-op visit, but...it's not...he wants to see me in March to see what this knot...aka, popped stitch...is doing and if it is still there, I may need to have to taken out...which means surgery #4 on my left hand/wrist. Oh well!

Fast forward about 2 hours and I was at Bob Bailey's visiting with Amanda. We were just chatting away and my cell phone rang. I looked at it and knew that I knew the number from somewhere but it wasn't programmed in my phone so I didn't know exactly who it was...I just knew that the number was familiar. I answered it and the voice on the other end (who sounded really familiar) asked to speak to Melissa. I said that I was Melissa and the voice said "hey Melissa, this is your doctor." Well, by then I knew it was Dr. A. My first thought was that I had left something at the office, like my book, and then my stomach hit the floor...I was thinking, "he's calling to tell me that he has looked back at my records and I need to have the stitch taken out now." He told me thank you for the cupcakes and that they were delicious...I thought, "man, this certainly is nice for him to call and tell me thank you." I told him he was welcome. He then asked if I made a carrot cake, which I do. His wife's birthday is on Christmas and he wanted to get a carrot cake with cream cheese icing for her. It took a few minutes for us to work out the details of getting the cake to Atlanta since he lives down there (I think) and I live in the sticks, I mean, in Loganville. He was very concerned about me driving all the back down there just to deliver a cake...I told him that I had gotten very used to driving down there...two times a week for 10 weeks for OT will do that! We got everything figured out and he said he would e-mail me at the gmail account for Perfect Yum so that we could be in touch with each other. As soon as I got off the phone Amanda asked, "was that your doctor? Did he order a cake?"About that time, my blackberry dinged and like he said, he had e-mailed me. Amanda and I chatted some more and then I decided I needed to get on my merry little way back home.

On the way home, my blackberry dinged and it was Dr. A again telling me that his father-in-law had already ordered a cake for Christmas day but that he would still love to get a cake from me sometime, like maybe the next time I was in the city. I wrote back that I understood and told him I was going to be in the city  today if he wanted to get a cake then and if not, once school started back that I could get there pretty quick from school. He wrote back and said today was great. Then came the hard part....he had to figure out what kind of cake, filling, and icing he wanted. He settled on a 9" round, 4- layer cake with yellow/fudge marble cake, cream cheese icing, and what he called the "oreos treatment"...crushed oreos between the layers and crushed oreos on top...just thinking about it will send your blood sugar through the roof! A bunch of e-mails later, we had everything figured out...I was just going to take the cake to the office and he would leave an envelope for me at the front desk.

Yesterday, I mixed and baked and crushed and iced and sprinkled
One layer of goodness...
cake, cream cheese icing, & crushed Oreos
until the cake was complete!  And let me tell you...I could have eaten a piece myself...it smelled delicious!! Today I got up, drove to Atlanta, picked up my friend Lauren (well, she's my brother's girlfriend, but she's still a friend) and went to deliver the cake. The doors and side panels to the office are glass from top to bottom so they have a great view of who is coming in the door. As soon as I opened the door with cake in hand, the girls' eyes lit up....they must have known what was coming! We traded a cake for an envelope and Lauren and I left...we were headed to lunch. Dr. A had asked me to e-mail him when I dropped the cake off so I did...a little bit later he wrote back to say he got it and that it looked great. I don't know if it was for the people at the office or his family, but I hope that whoever is eating it is enjoying it!

So the question now is....if I have to have surgery again, do you think Dr. A will trade surgery for cakes?

And the cutest dog award goes to.....

George!!

I played around with my camera some and I finally figured out how to change it to black/white and sepia...yes, I know I should have figured this out 2 Christmases ago when I got it, but I'm a little technically challenged when it comes to cameras. Anyway, I was able to snap some cute pictures of George, so I thought I would share here...maybe someone (I don't know if anyone else ever reads this blog) will look at them and it will make them smile!

"If I hide this bone between the pillows,
I can save it for later"

Love the spots in his mouth!

Someone has to sit here and just look cute, right?

I love this one...he looks so serious!

Such a cutie!
If it smells like a bone and looks like a bone, then it must be for me!
Perfecting the art of candy cane bone chewing.

Last but certainly not least.....#1

#1
Silent Night

Numbers #2-12 were in no particular order, but my #1 favorite Christmas song is Silent Night. Maybe it has to do with the simple melody or maybe the delicate words, but I really just love this song. As far back as I can remember, I haven't been able to sing this song without getting choked up and having a tear or 2 (oh, let's be honest...usually a lot of tears) roll down my cheeks.
I'm sure that 99.9% of the people reading this can sing at least one verse so before the Christmas season is a thing of the past, sing a verse or 2 and relish the simplicity and beauty of this amazing song.

Merry Christmas!

#3
O Come All Ye Faithful
Chris Rice
The Living Room Sessions: Christmas

I am a sucker for good piano music. Chris Rice has 2 albums that are solely him playing the piano. The Living Room Sessions: Christmas is full of incredible piano versions of religious Christmas songs....Silent Night, The First Noel, Joy To The World. All of the songs are amazing, but I am drawn to O Come All Ye Faithful. It's actually the first one I learned to play after I got the piano music that goes with the CD. Nothing quite like playing Christmas music on the piano with all the lights off...except, of course, for the twinkling lights of the tree, or in my case, the trees, and the garland on the piano!

#2
Little Drummer Boy
Matt Solik, Rachael Solik, Trey McKnight, & Jay Desai

I know all these guys (and gal) from my days at SUMC. One Christmas Eve, they did their version of Little Drummer Boy. Let me first say that I am just not a fan of this song in its original version....don't know why...it's just never been a favorite. But their version is anything but ordinary...it's a little bit of folk, a little bit of rock, and a whole lot of amazing! I think you can get it on iTunes (maybe)...but if not, you'll just have to trust me that it is amazing!

Baby, It's Cold Outside

I think most people fell in love with this song when they saw the movie "Elf," or at least I know I did. Since then I have heard a lot of different versions of it and to be honest, the Glee version is my favorite. Listen, relax, and enjoy!

#4
Christmas Tonight
Dave Barnes with Hillary Scott

Another duet...very much like "Baby, It's Cold Outside". I'm a huge Dave Barnes fan and the entire Christmas album, Very Merry Christmas, is wonderful.  If you're looking for a new Christmas CD that has a good mix of familiar songs and new stuff, this is it. Once again, listen, relax, and enjoy!

PS: This album is the type to put on late at night, turn off all the lights, except for the twinkling lights of the tree, and curl up with your significant other (or in my case, my dog), a good book, and a glass of wine or hot cocoa.

Seven and Six...

Since I missed yesterday, I have to play catch up today.

Last night I went to see Straight No Chaser, a group of 10 guys who sing a capella, and they are flat out amazing. I first heard of them when a friend of mine sent me a link to a You Tube video of them singing their version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. After hearing it, I was hooked. They have 2 Christmas CD's out and 1 other CD with a random assortment of songs. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

A great song! Find it on iTunes and listen!

On to number eight...

Coming in at #8 on the list of the list of M. Joy's 12 Favorite Christmas songs is...

I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas
Gayla Peevey

This song makes the list because my niece, the adorable Halliegator, absolutely loves this song. She sings along and cracks up the entire time...it's just too dang cute for words. If you want to crack a smile and maybe even a laugh a little, turn this song on and revert to being a child! Enjoy!

In at #10...

#10....I Pray on Christmas
Harry Conick, Jr.
I admit that I am not a fan of Harry's, but I do love this song...again, probably because of the amazing piano in it. I have looked at sheet music for it and don't think I have enough fingers to play all the notes that are played.

Couldn't find a good video on the song, so just take my word...it's good.

# 11...

#11....Winter Snow
Audrey Assad & Chris Tomlin
Glory In The Highest Album

Just a simple, beautiful song about the birth of Christ.

Not really sure where I first heard this song, but I immediately fell in love with it...probably has something to do with piano lead. I then found the sheet music and needless to say, I was content for quite a while to just sit at the piano, surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights, and play and sing.

Hope you enjoy!

Fa-la-la-la-la.....

I absolutely love Christmas music! Call me a dork but I listen to Christmas music pretty much continuously from Thanksgiving to New Year's (who says the joy of Christmas has to end at midnight on December 25?). I have a Holiday playlist on my iPod and it plays all the time...in the morning when I'm getting ready, on the way to school, in the media center or in my office, on my way home...you get the drift. I'm not lying when I say I love Christmas music.

Like most people, I have my favorites...and I also have the songs I really hate to hear...can anyone say "Christmas Shoes"? I can't hear that song without welling up and boo-hoo-ing like a baby. It has been played so much over the last few years that I am sick of it. And apparently, I'm not the only one. I've had the same conversation with at least 3 different groups of people...that song needs to be banned from the radio...not because it's a bad song, but because we get all weepy and look like morons when we hear it!

So back to my favorites. Yesterday officially started the "12 Days of Christmas" so I thought I would share my favorite 12 Christmas songs...in no particular order. I'll try to post one a day...we'll see if I can keep this up for 12 days. Since I am already a day behind, I'll have to catch up and post 2 one day...but not today.

M. Joy's 12 Favorite Songs of Christmas

#12

"I Believe in Santa Claus"
Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers
From "Once Upon A Christmas"

When I was growing up, we watched this Kenny and Dolly Christmas special every year when it came on. We even recorded it so somewhere in my parents' basement it a VHS tape of this fabulous show. A few years ago I was reminded of it and found the soundtrack on iTunes...and you had better believe that I hit the "Buy" button pretty quickly. "I Believe in Santa Claus" is by far my favorite song of the entire show and yes, I can sing the entire thing! I may be 32 years old, but there is still something magical about Santa Claus.

Enjoy!!

'Tis the Season....

'Tis the Season for Christmas trees, mass chaos at any shopping establishment, dozens of cookies and baked goodies, twinkling lights, and Christmas parties. For the past few years I have been saying that I was going to have a Christmas party....and I never did. I would always get wrapped up in the craziness of the season and before I knew it, everyone was planning New Year's Eve parties. This year, though, was different! Long about October, I decided I was really going to follow through and have a party. I set a date and got invitations out even before my family and friends had a chance to stuff their Thanksgiving turkey.

Then the planning began! I consulted the best party planner and thrower I know, my mom, and began planning out the menu. I started buying things a little at a time so I wouldn't have a panic attack at the check-out line when my total was through the roof. I took a trip to Trader Joe's to get wine and fell in love with the place!  Just a little side-note....I need a Trader Joe's in my life....don't think they are going to bring one out to the sticks where I live...so I guess I can add that to the "Reasons M. Joy Needs To Move ITP"  list. Of course, while I was there, I made a frantic call to my dear friend in NYC so he could tell me what kind of red wine to get. I confess, I'm not a red wine drinker, so I had no clue what to get. His question was "what's on the menu"...my response was "I'm not really sure." Thankfully, he made a great recommendation...if the number of bottles consumed is any indication, then it was a hit!

Then the week of the party approached and I was as giddy as a school girl! I was so excited about having all my friends come over and just have fun. I couldn't want until they all got to meet each other...they would finally get to put faces with the names I talk about all the time. I raided my parents' house for things I didn't have, went to Publix about 14 times, and got busy cleaning and working in the kitchen. Meatballs, pigs-in-a-blanket, spinach dip, cookies, chips, cupcakes, and lots of tempting goodies awaited my guests....and lots and lots of wine!

Then, like clockwork, the doorbell rang at precisely 7 pm and the party began. We ate, drank, talked, ate and drank some more, sang a few Christmas carols...my Jingle Bell tree even made an appearance during our rendition of Jingle Bells...thanks to CE for joining in and being our fabulous "jingle bell-er"...ate and drank some more, and just had a good time. I had a blast and I certainly hope my guests did too! I want this to be an annual tradition at my house....just good friends, good food, and fun....what a great way to ring in the season.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas season!
